A 500-square-meter thangka was unfurled at Drepung Monastery on Wednesday as the Shoton Festival got underway in Lhasa, southwest China's Xizang.

Known for its giant thangka unveiling, Tibetan opera and traditional celebrations, the festival is one of the most important cultural events in Lhasa.
