RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept.29,2020 -- At least 10.3 million people suffered from hunger in Brazil between 2017 and 2018, the state-run Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said on Thursday.

"If we look at the historical records, we see that there was a decrease in food security and a consequent increase in the indices of food insecurity among the Brazilian population," the IBGE said in a report.

The IBGE study did not include the homeless, so the actual number of people suffering from hunger could be higher.

Of those 10.3 million people, 7.7 million lived in urban centers and 2.6 million in rural areas, though rural populations are more likely to suffer from hunger because "people who are in urban areas have more food alternatives," the study said.

The figure means only 63.3 percent of Brazilian households enjoyed food security between 2017 and 2018. The highest percentage was reached in 2013, when 77.4 percent of all households had consistent access to quality food.

According to the study, moderate food insecurity, when there is a notable reduction in food consumption among adults forced to skip meals, grew the most between 2013 and 2018, increasing by 87.53 percent. Mild food insecurity, when there is concern about access to food and a drop in the quality of food consumed, grew by 71.5 percent.
