European parliament leaders’ meeting with Dalai harms China’s core interests

Sept. 23, 2016 -- China is strongly opposed to the recent meeting between the European Parliament leaders and the exiled Dalai Lama, China’s National People Congress said.

Disregarding China’s outcry, the European Parliament President Martin Schulz and Elmar Brok, Chairman of the committee on foreign affairs, insisted to meet the Dalai Lama on Sept.15, breaking their promises with China on Tibetan issues.

Tibet has always been an inseparable part of China and Tibet issues are about China’s core interests. China has reiterated that China firmly objects to Dalai’s secession activities in any countries or organizations and is opposed to any government or their officials meeting with him. The European Parliament leaders’ meeting with the Dalai Lama has severely harmed the core interests of China and the political foundation for exchanges between China’s NPC with the EU Parliament.

Tibet has made great progress in economic development, ethnic unity and social harmony since its democratic revolution in 1959. Religious freedom of Tibetans has been well protected and the so-called Tibetan issues preached by the Dalai Lama are nothing but fabrications. His intention to split Tibet from China has never changed no matter what he says. The European Parliament neglected and twisted the truth, regarding the 14th Dalai Lama as a spiritual and religious leader, which has encouraged the Dalai group to conduct secession activities and send wrong signals to the world.

China’s NPC has always highlighted the relations with the European Parliament. Both sides have conducted friendly communication and dialogues. Schulz said in his visit to China in 2015 that mutual respects are foundations for EU-China cooperation and the European Parliament will play an important role in promoting EU-China relations. We sincerely hope that European Parliament leaders could keep their words and be prudent with issues concerning China’s core interests and make more efforts to benefit EU-China relations.
