Poverty alleviation story of Bengani’s family

Dec.31,2020 -- 66-year-old Bengani lives in Baizhong Village of Chanang County, Shannan City, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
 
The local villagers used to make a living by farming. For Bengani, life was especially hard as three of the six members of her family were students, and her son-in-law suffered from poor eyesight. As a result, the family was one of the poverty-stricken households in the village.
 
Now, Buchung, Bengani's grandson, will graduated from college, Tenzin Yangdron, her granddaughter, studies at Tibet College of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, and Drolma Yangzom, her granddaughter, studies at a middle school. During spare times, Padma Lhadron, Bengani's daughter, usually does odd jobs. In first half of 2019, Bengani got out of poverty.
 
In 2016, Bengani's household was eligible for subsistence allowances. Thanks to the local government, Bengani, her daughter and son-in-law found jobs although they were lack of technical skills. Bengani was employed as a cleaner of the village. Her daughter and son-in-law chose to work in places with severe natural conditions and each of them got an annual subsidy of 3,500 yuan.
 
2018 was a year of great change for Bengani. In first half, with an investment of 40,000 yuan, Kelzang Dondrup, Bengani's son-in-law, opened a Tibetan furniture store in the county. "We got a subsidy of 20,000 yuan from the national entrepreneur fund for handicapped. The business goes well now, we can earn 20,000 yuan to 30,000 yuan a year by making furniture, and get rid of poverty," says Bengani.
 
In 2018, the per capita annual income of Bengani's household reached 9,545.21 yuan, almost three times higher than that of 2016.
 
In first half of 2019, Bengani got out of poverty.
 
"Now, with the support of the national targeted poverty alleviation policy, we are free from worries over food and clothing and have access to compulsory education, basic medical services and safe housing. I will work hard to do cleaning work, and I believe we will have a better tomorrow." says Bengani.
