Sept. 29, 2016 -- Tibet’s first test-tube baby was born on September 24 in Tibet Fukang Maternal and Children Hospital, a great breakthrough of IVF technology at such a high altitude.

The baby boy is healthy with a weight of 2.69 kilograms.

"IVF has been a challenge in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau due to high elevation, lack of oxygen and low air pressure," said Wu Dong, an expert in maternal and children hygiene.

"A lot of Tibetan parents want to have babies through IVF technology. The success of the first test-tube baby will ease their pressures to see doctors outside Tibet," said Wang Bin, founder of Tibet Fukang Maternal and Children Hospital.

The first test-tube baby in the world was born in Britain in 1978 and the first test-tube baby in China was born in 1988 in Beijing.
