Cross-regional collaboration shines at Lhasa's New Year fair

Feb.1, 2024 -- A New Year-themed fair featuring various wares was held at the Lhasa Ancient Courtyard in Lhasa, the capital of the Xizang autonomous region, to herald the upcoming Chinese Spring Festival and the Tibetan New Year, also known as Losar.
 
This year, Losar and the Chinese Spring Festival fall on the same day, Feb 10.
 
Inside the bustling courtyard, merchants sell various goods, such as coffee, beauty products, handicrafts, rugs, artistic paintings, snacks, leather goods, jewelry and pendants.

The event unfolded at the heart of the ancient city and showcased a vibrant cultural extravaganza, marking the onset of the traditional Tibetan Losar New Year celebrations.
 
Fair attendees witnessed a rich tapestry of cultural performances, including traditional Tibetan dances, a captivating Tibetan children's fashion show, and melodic folk singing, all designed to honor the spirit of the festive season.
 
Over 30 businesses and rural cooperatives participated in the fair, each contributing to the diverse exhibition areas, featuring cultural and creative wares, dining, artisanal crafts, home furnishings, handmade goods and daily necessities.

Notably, the market event also served as a platform for artisans and exhibitors from regions beyond Lhasa, with representation from Gansu and Qinghai provinces and the Inner Mongolian autonomous region, showcasing their handicrafts and intangible cultural heritage products.
 
This cross-regional exchange and collaboration added a new dimension to the event, attracting a throng of residents and tourists who flocked to the market and infusing the ancient city of Lhasa with a vibrant festive atmosphere.
 
According to Xizang Dropenling Culture, co-organizer of the fair, the event is a prelude to the upcoming New Year celebrations, and it is also part of efforts to promote and preserve traditional culture while fostering a healthy, joyful, and harmonious festive atmosphere through a diverse array of activities.
