Shared Himalayan pain, shared call for climate justice

On the morning of Aug 26, a section of a glacier in the Himalayas plunged into the Lhende River, a tributary of Nepal's Bhote Koshi River, blocking it with a wall of ice, rock and mud.

When that improvised dam gave way, it sent a flood surging down the Trishuli corridor, before slamming into Gyirong Port on the Chinese side.

The death toll is still rising.

It was, by any measure, a disaster the region's riparian communities had never witnessed.

Thousands of families on both sides of the border are still waiting for loved ones who may never return.

Whole villages were swept away; parents lost children, and children lost parents. The pain of waiting to know whether people are going to come back is unspeakable.

As Global South countries, China and Nepal share a similar trajectory of development, while bearing far less historical responsibility for carbon emissions, the major source of current climate change and effects.

Whatever else divides Nepal and China along their 1,400-km border, the response to the calamity showed what functioning neighborly cooperation looks like during an emergency.

China activated a Level-II national disaster relief emergency response covering all affected people regardless of nationality.

Its Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched tunnel-rescue specialists to Nepal, while PLA Air Force Y-20 aircraft carried tents, blankets, sleeping bags, rations and first-aid kits from Chengdu, China's Sichuan province, to Kathmandu.

China's Ministry of Natural Resources shared satellite and hydrological data with its Nepali counterpart and began releasing 3D reconstructions of the collapse.

Premier Li Qiang visited the areas affected by the disaster to supervise rescue operations, reflecting a coherent political and operational response.

The foreign ministries of China and Nepal have maintained continuous communication.

China has expressed its readiness to offer additional support tailored to the needs of Nepal.

Scientists call this system — the Hindu Kush Himalayan range and the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau — the Third Pole or Asian Water Tower: the largest freshwater reserve outside the two poles, and the source of the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Yangtze and Mekong rivers, on which nearly two billion people depend.

That system has warmed roughly 0.42°C per decade since 1980, nearly double the global average, destabilizing glaciers and multiplying unstable lakes at altitudes hardest to survey or instrument.

A joint ICIMOD-UNDP assessment identified 3,624 glacial lakes across the region, 47 potentially dangerous, including 21 in Nepal.

Aug 26 was not an anomaly: this was the third major glacier- or lake-triggered flood to strike the corridor in just over a year, following a July 2025 flood in Xizang autonomous region that swept away the Miteri Bridge linking the two countries.

The pattern is no longer anomalous, it is structural.

Despite scientific evidence of climate change affecting the Himalayas during challenging times, there is a tendency among certain individuals to lay the blame on China for various issues, including natural disasters.

In the wake of a recent flood, some people began to criticize China before any scientific evidence was assessed.

It is essential to recognize that China is also a developing nation undergoing significant modernization, and no political system can entirely prevent natural disasters.

Historically, China has faced numerous devastating natural events such as earthquakes, floods, typhoons, and landslides, many of which are exacerbated by climate change.

Despite these challenges, China is positioning itself to take a leading role in green development and resilience against future natural disasters.

Its installed renewable capacity passed 2,337 gigawatts in 2025, with wind and solar overtaking thermal power in its installed capacity for the first time, and its renewable output, roughly 4 trillion kilowatt-hours, now exceeds the European Union's entire consumption.

That build-out is going global: Chinese solar and wind exports reached roughly $29 billion, with Global South sales growing fastest, and Beijing's overseas cooperation has shifted toward smaller, community-scale projects suited to remote terrain.

Its $3.1 billion China South-South Climate Cooperation Fund was built as a developing-country adaptation vehicle outside the traditional donor-recipient model.

The Asian Water Tower belongs to neither country alone, and the injustice it is delivering was manufactured by neither.

What Aug 26 offers, alongside its grief, is unusually clear evidence for an argument long made quietly: that a region contributing almost nothing to the emissions warming its own glaciers has a legitimate claim on the finance and technology of the states most responsible for that warming.

Whether this becomes a footnote or a turning point depends on whether Kathmandu, Beijing and the wider Global South press that case together, before the next glacier moves.
