April 2
On April 2, 1950, a Tibetan representative plotting to come to Beijing to declare “Tibet independence” arrived in India. On March 15, the representative dispatched by the Tibetan local government wrote to the Chinese consul general in Hong Kong asking to negotiate with a representative of the Chinese central government in Hong Kong, after his meeting with India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in New Delhi, India.
On May 28, Lin Boqu, Secretary-General of the Chinese central government replied that the Tibetan representative could come to Beijing to negotiate only on behalf of the Tibetan local government. Later, a member of the Chinese Embassy in India met with the Tibetan representative, introduced the country’s ethnic policies, stressed national reunification as the country’s unwavering goal, and stated that the intention of realizing so-called “Tibet Independence” through negotiations was totally wrong.
