Black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis)
Black-necked crane is included in the country’s level one protection list. Among the world’s 15 crane species, this is the only one that dwells on plateau. It is called “panda among the birds.” Black-necked cranes are tall and graceful. They often dance on the banks of rivers or lakes. Due to the hard natural conditions, this crane has a low rate of reproduction. The “International Birds Red Data Book” and the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” both listed the black-necked crane as an endangered species. At the Xainza County of Nagqu, a 14,000-square-kilometre wetland nature reserve around the Seling Co (Qiling Lake) is specially set up to protect the black-necked cranes. Recently, some black-necked cranes were found at Lhunzhub County to the north of Lhasa.
Snow leopard (Panthera uncial)
Snow leopard is included in the country's level one protection list. Black dots cover the grayish white fur. The leopard is over 1 metre long and weighs between 100-150 kilograms. With a head the size of a cat, the leopard is fast as lightening. It often preys upon Bharal, fox, hare, pheasant and others close to the snow line of high mountains.
