(ECNS) -- Tibetan farmers and herdsmen are planting trees along the banks of the Yarlung Zangbo River in Zhanang County, Shannan City, Tibet Autonomous Region.

The greening project along the banks began in 1980s when severe sandstorms began eroding highland barley fields.

Wind-break and sand-fixation moves such as planting trees thus began in order to protect the cultivated land.

Now an ecological corridor of over 160 kilometers long and an area of over 500,000 mu (about 33333.3 hectares) has been formed along the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, according to the forestry and grassland management authorities of Shannan City.
