Tibetan herders in NW China expect thriving summer tourism season

Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of northwest China's Gansu Province is witnessing a growing number of tourists as the summer tourism season begins.

Tent hotels, decorated with Tibetan-style furniture and modern facilities, attract tourists from near and far and offer them a fusion of tradition and luxury.

Activities like horse riding, dancing in circles, and tasting homemade yak jerky, yogurt and yak butter tea offer an ideal idyllic life for city dwellers.

In the past, the prefecture, though endowed with natural resources, seldom saw any tourists due to its remote location and weak infrastructure.

Changes began after the local government initiated a series of projects aimed at transforming backward rural and pastoral settlements into modern tourism destinations.

Tourism has spectacularly changed the lives of Tibetan herders. In 2021, Gannan saw about 20 million visits, generating a revenue of about 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion U.S. dollars).
