The Tibet autonomous region plans to upgrade its aviation network in the near future so that more airports and more parking aprons will be built to accommodate aircraft in the region, according to the regional Development and Reform Commission.

Under the general aviation development plan released by the commission on its official website recently, during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) and beyond, the region will upgrade its aviation network.

The long-term plan calls for all counties and districts of the region to be linked with air services by 2035. More parking aprons are excepted to be built, and the number of general airports in the region is expected to reach 59. Each county-level administration will have at least one general airport and more than 95 percent of the population will be covered by air services.

Currently, the region has a few key general aviation airports, including Gongkar Airport in Lhasa, Bangda Airport in Chamdo, Gunsa Airport in Ngari Prefecture, Manling Airport in Nyingchi and the Heping Airport in Shigatse. Two of the three newly built branch airports in the region have started operating.

The construction of Lhasa General Airport, part of the region's emergency rescue base, has been approved by higher authorities and have started construction. Seventeen counties and districts in the region have begun the work of selecting locations for airport construction.
