June 24, 2021 -- China repudiates remarks made by United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on China's Xinjiang and calls for immediate halt to the misinformation campaign that aims to interfere in China's internal affairs, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Tuesday.

Bachelet on Monday said that the UN human rights body will "look into reports of serious violations against Muslim Uyghurs (Uygurs)."

Zhao in response welcomed the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit Xinjiang, emphasizing that visit should be a friendly one to promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation rather than to carry a "so-called criminal investigation."

"We are firmly opposed to anyone using this issue for political manipulation to put pressure on China," he stressed.

Noting that Xinjiang enjoys social stability and economic prosperity and the human rights of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang are fully protected, Zhao further pointed out that some countries spread lies and false information about Xinjiang in an attempt to tarnish China's image, interfere in China's internal affairs and curb China's development.
