Feb.27,2020 -- The 43rd session of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council held a high-level panel discussion Tuesday commemorating the 25th anniversary of the “Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action” adopted at the 4th World Conference on Women in 1995. High-level representatives from more than 100 countries, diplomatic envoys in Geneva and representatives of international organizations attended the event.

The adoption of the “Beijing Declaration” has greatly promoted the development and progress of global women’s cause, but there is still a long way to go to achieve gender equality and women's rights, said Chen Xu, permanent representative of China to the UN Office, in his keynote address.

The international community should work together to carry forward the spirit of the Beijing World Conference on Women, promote women's cause through development, and improve the protection of women's rights and interests, noted Chen.

Chen introduced China’s progress in promoting gender equality, saying that China adheres to the basic state policy of equality between men and women and will continue to promote women's empowerment.

Chen also paid tribute to the women at the frontline of the fight against the epidemic, stressing that they are role models for all women and it’s exactly a vivid portrayal of the progress of women's cause in China.

In September 2019, on the initiative of China, Denmark, Kenya, Mexico and France, the 42nd session of the UN Human Rights Council unanimously adopted a resolution to hold a high-level meeting at the 43rd session to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the “Beijing Declaration”.
