July 30, 2018-- The Chinese military has made a major contribution to global peace and stability amid rising threats, a Chinese diplomat said here on Thursday.

Wang Yang, defense attache at the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, said that China will endeavor to pursue peaceful development and stabilization of the world order even as it modernizes its military to respond effectively to contemporary security challenges.

"China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and an upholder of international order," Wang said during an event to mark 91 years since the founding of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

"The growth of the Chinese military also means the growth of world peacekeeping force," he added.

Kenya's senior military officials, including the country's first female major general, Fatuma Ahmed, attended the function.

Wang noted that an upgraded version of China-Kenya diplomatic engagement has expanded to cover defense.

"With the bilateral relations having stood at a new historical point for a golden era, the bilateral military relationship, which is an important component of overall bilateral relations, will surely have more golden opportunities ahead and more sweet fruits to harvest," said Wang.

He hailed fruitful exchanges between Chinese and Kenyan defense forces that have intensified in recent times.

Wang said that a modern and well-equipped Chinese military will be on the standby to protect civilians in major hotspots.

"For the time being, among the permanent member states of the UN Security Council, China has contributed the largest number of troops to UN peacekeeping missions and the second largest share to the UN peacekeeping budget," said Wang.

He said China has since 1990 participated in 24 UN peacekeeping operations while contributing more than 37,000 peacekeepers to support this endeavor.

The defense attache said that Chinese naval forces continue to offer protection to merchant ships sailing along the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia.

"Up to now the PLA Navy is still keeping the proud record of 100 percent safety for both the escort task groups themselves and the merchant ships which have been escorted," said Wang.
