Dec. 21, 2023 -- Despite recently experiencing its first winter snowfall, Khangmar county in Shigatse city of the Xizang autonomous region held a fruit and vegetable harvesting festival in its greenhouse project, as reported by Xizang Daily.

The greenhouses are in Samada township of Khangmar county at an altitude of 4,400 meters. In recent years, the local government has supported greenhouse plantation projects as part of their efforts in rural vitalization.

Upon entering the greenhouses at the county's high-quality vegetable production base, visitors immediately feel a sense of warmth and are greeted by a vibrant spring-like atmosphere. Strawberries, peppers, cherry tomatoes, figs, cherries, zucchinis, and grapes flourish inside the greenhouses.

In the strawberry greenhouse, rows of vibrant red berries hang plentifully, attracting numerous visitors to pick them. Dechen Tsomo, a first-time visitor to the base, was quoted by Xizang Daily as saying, "It's hard to believe that at such a high altitude and in such cold weather, one can cultivate such a variety of exotic fruits."

Thanks to the ample sunlight and significant temperature differences between day and night in Samada, the plants produce more sugar, resulting in delicious winter strawberries, which have become highly sought-after delicacies.

"These strawberries are big, sweet, juicy, and incredibly flavorful," exclaimed visitor Gadron, who had tried them last year and couldn't forget their taste. This year, she traveled to Khangmar county to experience the joy of picking strawberries again.

Nyima Tsamchod, a local villager and beneficiary of the plantation project, mentioned that her ancestors had never grown these crops, and many of them had never even seen them before. She expressed her gratitude to the local government for supporting such a project and mentioned receiving 60,000 yuan ($8,400) in land transfer fees from the project operator.

The base represents a new economic model that integrates technological innovation, research on new varieties, and the development of high-altitude fruit and vegetable industries. This model promotes land transfer, job creation, and industry dividends to boost local income.

Gonbo Dorje, an official from the county government, expressed the county's commitment to accelerating the transformation and upgrading of agriculture and animal husbandry.

They aim to integrate agriculture, culture, and tourism development and comprehensively promote rural vitalization. The goals are to improve the quality, increase efficiency, and promote income growth for rural residents.
