Sept.10,2020 -- The construction crew from the China Railway 15th Bureau Group Co. LTD has finished the top-layer asphalt pavement of Xierong tunnel, Tibet’s first three-lane highway tunnel with large cross section. The tunnel is ready to open to traffic.

Chen Longlong, the superintendent of the first segment of the Lhasa-Shigatse Road, said that the first segment connects Lhasa Gonggar Airport with Qushui County in Lhasa and includes three tunnels and a grand bridge. 

 

“Compared with other three segments of the Lhasa-Shigatse Road, the first segment has the most tunnels and complicated geographical conditions. Affected by COVID-19, construction was delayed for nearly two months. However, we have overcome multiple difficulties and finished the work ahead of schedule, which has made it possible for the Lhasa segment to open on October 1,” said Li Sheng, director of the engineering department of the Lhasa segment of the Lhasa-Shigatse Road.

The construction of the Lhasa-Shigatse Road is key to improving Tibet’s road networks, strengthening China’s national defense and boosting regional social and economic development.
