April 8,2020 -- 99% of rural people in southwest China’s Tibet autonomous region have access to safe drinking water, a goal that Tibet achieved one year ahead of schedule.

In recent years, Tibet has set up water supply facilities in its vast rural and pastoral areas, which promotes convenience and changes the drinking habits of local people. It also helps drop the incidence of diseases and boost social and economic development.

In 2019, Tibet put 1.969 billion yuan, including 532 million yuan from the central government and 1.437 billion yuan of local investment, in drinking water safety projects, benefiting 490,000 people. A total of 51.69 million yuan was committed to the maintenance of 2,691 water supply facilities in rural areas.

Tibet will strengthen protection of drinking water sources and improve the water quality monitoring system in rural areas. By the end of 2020, 80% of rural residents will get access to safe tap water.
