Aug.9, 2019 -- Ji Qiumei,54, is the party secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Institute of Tibet Academy of Agriculture and Animal Sciences and the chief expert on Tibetan yak industry. After graduating from Southwest Minzu University in 1988, and obtaining her doctorate from abroad in 2002, she has been engaged in yak studying for 31 years.

Ji Qiumei and her team have confirmed the genetic diversity of Tibetan yaks and selected over 4,000 yaks of fine breeding. She has made breakthroughs in a number of key production technologies to help local herdsmen for a better living, and established a complete set of techniques for producing yak embryos.

“Yaks are more than just a means of livelihood to poor families; they mean everything to the herdsmen,” Ji often said, “I’m a herdsman’s child, so I would like to help my homeland with everything I’ve learned.”

Since 2015, Ji has been serving as chairman of the Association of Tibetan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary. The association has held science promotion activities in the high altitude areas, technical demonstration bases and herdsmen’s communities for years in a row, and has trained about 50,000 technicians and farmers and herdsmen altogether.
