Mar. 15, 2018 -- The water quality in the Qinghai Lake basin remained stable and excellent from 2010 to 2017, according to a survey conducted by the Qinghai environmental protection bureau. As China’s largest inland saltwater lake, Qinghai Lake plays an important role in the ecological security of the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Over the past seven years, the surface water quality of eight rivers flowing into Qinghai Lake met the provincial assessment target. In 2017, the average surface water quality in Qinghai met the Grade II national standard. Among the 59 spots monitored, 84.7 percent of them have reached Grades I-III standards. According to data from the Qinghai Institute of Meteorological Sciences, the surface area of Qinghai Lake reached 4,497.01 square kilometers in 2017, the highest record since 2001, contributing to the improvement of the surrounding ecology and the habitat for many bird species and other wildlife.
