BEIRUT, Aug.21,2020 -- United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said here Wednesday that the agency will allocate millions of U.S. dollars to help Lebanon's hospitals damaged in Beirut's explosions on Aug. 4, the National News Agency reported.

"The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) usually focuses on supporting Syrian refugees, but we will also help Lebanese hospitals and will cooperate with the Lebanese Red Cross to provide shelters for 100,000 people, in addition to adopting programs for the psychological health of people following the explosion," said Grandi.

The official met with Lebanese President Michel Aoun at Baabda Palace.

Grandi assured that all UN agencies are working in coordination to provide support for the Lebanese who were affected by the explosion.

The UNHCR is also in contact with Syrian authorities to manage support for Syrian refugees, and discuss the possibility of their return to their homeland, he added.

For his part, Aoun emphasized the need for refugees to return to their homeland given the economic deterioration in Lebanon.

"The flow of refugees to Lebanon has so far cost the treasury around 30 billion U.S. dollars," Aoun said.

Over 1.5 million Syrian refugees left their homeland to Lebanon following the eruption of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
