BEIRUT, May 11,2020 -- The UNICEF representative in Lebanon on Friday called for the Lebanese cabinet's assistance in supporting the weakest segment of the society, according to a statement by the Lebanese finance ministry.
"We urge the cabinet to take into account in its economic plan the need to help donors collect funds to enable vulnerable people to receive quick humanitarian support," Yukie Mokuo said during her visit to Finance Minister Ghazi Wazne.
Mokuo's remarks come a day after UN agencies issued a joint appeal for donors to urgently support the global emergency supply system with an initial 350 million U.S. dollars to help vulnerable countries fight COVID-19.
Lebanon has distributed 400,000 Lebanese pounds (264 U.S. dollars) per family in social aid, a very low amount considering the increase in the price of the dollar against the local currency.
