|CHICAGO, Jan.30,2018-- A total of 19 people were shot from Friday afternoon to early Monday in the U.S. city of Chicago, according to data compiled by the Chicago Tribune.
Among the 19 people shot, two were fatally and 17 wounded. But the city sees less gun violence this year than the previous two years at this time.
Data shows at least 187 people have been shot in Chicago so far this year, including 34 homicides. That's about two-thirds of the levels seen in 2016 and 2017 for both categories, though 2018 is ahead of the pace from 2015 and other recent years.
Homicides in Chicago were 670 in 2017, down 16 percent from 792 in 2016.
In 2016, Chicago, the third largest city in the United States by population, recorded more homicides and shooting victims than New York City and Los Angeles combined, which prompted the Chicago police and civic organizations to join hands in curbing the gun-related crimes.
