Aug. 25, 2020 -- Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, China has made great achievements in poverty relief. The number of impoverished people has decreased from 98.99 million people at the end of 2012 to 5.51 million people at the end of 2019. Poverty rate has dwindled from 10.2% in 2012 to 0.6% in 2019 with the number of indigent counties dropping from 832 to 52.
China is about to secure a victory in fully completing the building of a moderately society in all respects in 2020 which is also the last year of China’s poverty alleviation campaign. The abrupt outbreak of coronavirus has brought many challenges and difficulties to poverty relief. Some labor forces in indigent families couldn’t leave their hometowns to work in cities and production activities in some impoverished areas were thwarted by the epidemic because raw materials couldn’t come in and agricultural products couldn’t be sold out.
After the outbreak of the epidemic, the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development has made a series of arrangements to help the most vulnerable groups to tide over the difficulties. The central government organized eastern prosperous provinces to pick up labor forces stuck in hometowns due to the epidemic and helped migrant workers return home to find jobs. By July 31st, the number of migrant workers in 52 impoverished counties had reached 2.85 million.
As China has largely contained the spread of coronavirus and more enterprises have resumed production, the possibility of returning to poverty caused by the epidemic has sharply decreased. The goals of poverty alleviation campaign can be achieved on schedule.
