|May 25, 2018-- Themed on "Sharing and Promoting Cooperation: Joining Hands in Poverty Reduction", the 2018 Poverty Reduction International Forum was held in Beijing on May 23. Nearly 200 officials and representatives from both China and international organizations attended the forum.
Chen Zhigang, deputy director of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, said at the forum that China has reduced the impoverished population from 98.99 million in 2012 to 30.46 million in 2017, which is a miracle in human history.
Although improvements have been made in poverty reduction, the issue remains a common challenge for the world. International cooperation should be strengthened and broadened, and we need to promote innovation to address the challenge, said Vincent Martin, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization representative in China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The forum also launched a program to gather good practices on poverty reduction, aiming to share global wisdom to reduce poverty.
The forum was co-sponsored by China Internet News Center, China International Poverty Reduction Center in China, the World Bank, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the World Food Programme and the Asian Development Bank.
