Nov. 8, 2016 -- China canceled a high-level bilateral meeting with Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico Saturday, in a move seen as a protest against Slovakian President Andrej Kiska’s meeting with Dalai Lama last month.
Last week, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang attended the Fifth Summit of China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEE) in Riga, capital of Latvia.
Premier Li was scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Fico. But China canceled it before the summit.
It’s reported that Kiska had a private meeting with Dalai Lama on Oct. 16.
“It is a pity that Slovakia has failed to promote cooperation with China. We will make efforts to repair the damage,” said Fico.
Fico has taken quick action to salvage the situation by inviting Premier Li for a visit.
