Mama Town: green industries help people get rich

Feb.4,2020 -- Located in the south foothill of the Himalayas, Mama Town (a place where Monpa ethnic group lives in) of Cona County, Shannan City, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, enjoys many ecological honorary titles and adheres to green development.
 
Padma Yangjen, the head of Mama Town, says, "here, the altitude is relatively low with lush forests, beautiful mountains and pleasant climate. Good ecology is our best resource, and protecting natural environment and developing border rural tourism are the common choices of all our people."
 
In 2014, based on the actual situation, the county comprehensively promoted the construction of the moderately prosperous model village of ecological civilization, which was initially built in the following year. The broad road to the countryside, the buildings highlighting the characteristics of the Menba ethnic group, and the murmuring water landscape brought a new look to Mama Town, and the rural tourism industry also began to take off.
 
In order to improve the reception capacity, so that tourists can retain and have a good time, many villagers start to open agritainment.
 
70-year-old Wangdu is a nonnative personnel who have moved into Legbu Valley from other place, and one of the first batch of villagers who have opened agritainment in 2015. He says, " with beautiful mountains, clean water, and hospitable people, more and more tourists come here to travel. Rooms are often full during holidays, and some tourists stay for up to a week at a time."
 
Drolam, chairman of Women's Federation of Mama Town, opens an agritainment, which provides accommodation and catering.
 
Drolam is a native woman of Monpa ethnic group. In the past, her family lived in a shanty house of only 60 square meters and lived by weaving bamboo products. All the income added up to about 4,000 yuan RMB a year.
 
In the town, 50 households have gotten rich by managing an agritainment. Last year, the town's tourism revenue exceeded 1.2 million yuan RMB.
 
In order to extend product line, relying on local resources, Mama Town develops specialty agricultural and sideline products. Through the establishment of cooperatives, the town makes efforts to increase the product production and promotion. Products such as wooden bowls and bamboos have become popular souvenirs among tourists. At the same time, the town also tries to plant organic tea, which is expected to promote the development of its green industries.
