July 9,2018--According to recent information from the Ngari Prefecture Forestry Bureau in Tibet, the number of protected animals at the national level in Ngari has increased significantly over the last 20 years. The number of Tibetan antelope has increased from 20,000 to 60,000; Tibetan wild donkeys have increased from 15,000 to 40,000, and the snow leopard population has more than doubled. The biodiversity in the area is being protected effectively.

Located in western Tibet, Ngari Prefecture has an average elevation of more than 4,500 meters above sea level and has an area of more than 300,000 square kilometers. It is a paradise for many wildlife species. Ngari currently has 14 nature reserves and three national-level forest and wetland parks that have a total area of 167,000 square kilometers. There are 19 national key protected animals, of which seven are grade one protected animals and 12 are grade two.

Over the years, Ngari Prefecture has invested 149 million yuan to fund restoration and preservation work at Pangong Tso, Lake Manasarovar, Zhari Namtso, and six other major lake and wetland nature reserves. Forestry bureaus at the prefecture and county levels have reduced the number of poaching incidents by strengthening patrols and management, and at the same time, Ngari has actively handed out compensation totaling more than 20 million yuan for accidents involving wild animals.
