July 22,2016--The latest scientific research results show that the water quality of Yarlung Tsangpo River basin in Tibet is in good condition overall. In addition, it maintains good ecological environment.

An environmental quality survey on Tibet's Yarlung Tsangpo River basin has been jointly implemented recently by Tibet University, Tianjin University, Beijing University, and the Geography and Resources Institute of  Chinese Academy of Sciences.

According to Tanxin, a professor of Tibet University, the scope this survey includes the source of Yarlung Tsangpo River and overseas main streams and tributaries. By collecting water and sediment samples, carrying out field test, and conducting subsequent laboratory analysis, the above conclusion is achieved.

"The conclusion provides scientific basis for the environmental protection and  sustainable utilization of water resources of Yarlung Tsangpo River. What's more, it will also provide strong and firm support for building ecological and safe highland screen," says Tanxin.

Yarlung Tsangpo River is the longest plateau river in China and its water reserve is only second to Changjiang. It is Tibet's mother river and it is the artery of economic development. About half of Tibet's population and industrial and agricultural production is concentrated in the basin.

Since the 1980s, afforestation project has been carried out in the Yarlung Tsangpo River basin, which not only protects the ecological environment but also protects the water quality.
