Oct. 27, 2020 -- Recently, the 3rd Cross-Himalaya Extreme Bike Race, co-sponsored by General Administration of Sport of China, China Media Group and People's Government of Tibet Autonomous Region, was successfully held in Nyingchi City, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Over 100 riders from 26 different cycling teams gathered to enjoy this special cycling event on the plateau.

Themed as "connecting with 'the Belt and Road' through the South Asia Gateway to develop Tibet's sports tourism and build outdoor sports area", with the slogan of "riding along the most beautiful road & embracing Himalaya", this race lasted for three days. The competition included three stages and was divided into two categories: 218km road cycling race and226km mountain cycling race. The starting point was Nyingchi Convention and Exhibition Center, and the destination was Potala Palace Square at Lhasa City. This event helps to build sports brand with plateau characteristic, construct Tibet into a national outdoor sports area, constantly cultivate and strengthen Tibet's sports industry, and promote the construction of a new modern socialist Tibet that is united, prosperous, culturally advanced, harmonious and beautiful.

Jiang Zhihui, from Tibet Team, said that it was his first time riding on the plateau. "I felt more tired than riding on the plain. The hardest part was the latter one because of the strong wind and high altitude. But there were a lot of people cheering for us during the race and I was very touched."

Nyima Tsering, deputy secretary and director of Sports Bureau of Tibet Autonomous Region, introduced that since 2018, Tibet has built Cross-Himalaya ExtremeBike Race into a brand event, attracting many outdoor cycling enthusiasts. "One of the major features of this year's event was the beautiful scenery of Basum Tso Lake. As the carrier and brand of promoting the development of Tibet's tourism, Cross-Himalaya Extreme Bike Race not only carries forward the sports spirit, but also better shows the unique and abundant natural resources, historic culture and national customs of our region. In the future, the region will continuously make effort to expand and strengthen the brand of 'Cross-Himalaya', improve the quality and efficiency of sports development, speed up the development of sports with plateau characteristics, and promote the construction of sports power," according to Nyima Tsering.
