July 9,2020 -- E-ticket system will be launched Thursday on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world's highest rail system, in northwest China, the railway operator said Wednesday.

 

The full launch of the e-ticket system, which does not require passengers to use paper tickets for boarding trains, follows an earlier application at four stations along the railway starting June 20, according to China Railway Qinghai-Tibet Group Co. Ltd.

 

It will also be implemented on the Lhasa-Xigaze section, the first extension line of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

 

Passengers using e-tickets will be able to pass checks with their ID cards and facial recognition at stations. The system also reduces waiting time and eliminates the risk of losing tickets.

 

E-tickets were piloted at high-speed train stations in the island province of Hainan in November 2018 and had covered all high-speed, inter-city railways on the Chinese mainland by April 29 this year.

 

Starting operations in 2006, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the world's highest and longest railway built on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
