Mar. 28, 2019 -- People often associate Tibet with its high altitude, frigid weather and oxygen deprivation, but Nyingchi seeks to offer tourists a different experience, said Tenzin Samdrup, head of Nyingchi's Tourism Development Office on Saturday.

Nyingchi is located at the lower section of the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the southeastern part of China's Tibet Autonomous Region. It has an average altitude of around 3,000 meters and is only 900 meters above sea level at its lowest point.

The city boasts a mild climate, sufficient oxygen, abundant natural resources and is also home to unique ethnic minorities, thus becoming a fascinating destination for tourists, Tenzin Samdrup said in an exclusive interview with China.org.cn.

He said that Nyingchi's tourism sector has developed rapidly and brought significant benefits to locals in recent years. Given its growth, he added that tourism could soon become one of the city's key industries.

International tourist town sees growth in local homestay economy

The Lulang International Tourism Town lies alongside the China National Highway 318, which is dubbed "one of China's most beautiful highways." Within the 10-square-kilometer scenic area, one can find wide-ranging natural landscapes, including glaciers, mountains, canyons, forests and lakes.

Xie Binhui, deputy director of the Lulang Scenic Area Management Committee, said that the tourism town was constructed with investment from the Guangdong provincial government as a support to the development of Tibet.

Since it opened to the public in 2016, the resort has received more than one million arrivals, which has boosted local economic growth and raised the income of people living in surrounding rural areas, Xie said.

Lhapa Tsering, who was once a construction worker before 2011, now runs a homestay inn with 24 rooms that can accommodate 44 guests in Lulang Town.

The 42-year-old said that he earned about 500,000 yuan (US$74,450) from his homestay business last year, a significant increase compared to his previous annual income of 30,000 yuan (US$4,467) to 40,000 yuan (US$5,956) at his former job.

"I now have seven employees working in my inn," Lhapa Tsering added. "My younger sister and brother also run their own homestay business nearby."
