October 10,2017--After the third time of the variety renewal, in 2016, the annual output of Tibet's highland barley reached nearly 750000 tons, nearly 6 times than that of 1960, according to the Tibet Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
"Improved variety is important technology carrier to promote the development of agriculture and animal husbandry and also important kinetic energy to increase grain yield," says Nima Tashi, dean of the Tibet Academy of Agricultural Sciences, “highland barley is the main food crop in Tibet. The selection and breeding of improved variety as well as the promotinon and application of new variety play an important role in ensuring the grain ration safety of the masses in Tibet.”
Early in 1951, agricultural expert group has been sent to Tibet to conduct agricultural scientific investigation. By identifying and screening the variety of local highland barley, Tibet's highland barley variety realized the first time of renewal. After the founding of Tibet Autonomous Region, it realized another two times of renewal in succession.
"The prosperous development of highland barley processing industry requires more high yield and high quality varieties," says Nima Tashi, "the Tibet Academy of Agricultural Sciences has developed more than 40 kinds of highly processed highland barley products together with over 20 research units, colleges and enterprises in China, which can provide sound technology support for the industrialization of highland barley."
