May 3,2017--Gansu Province in northwest China has translated and digitized over 300 films and TV shows into Amdo Tibetan, a main Tibetan dialect since 2009, giving "mental fuel" for farmers and shepherds living in remote nomadic areas. In addition, as films and TV products in ethnic languages are promoted, minority languages are effectively protected and passed on.

There are almost 2.8 million residents living in Amdo Tibetan-speaking regions in parts of Qinghai and Gansu provinces, as well as Sichuan Province' Aba Prefecture, about 44% of the total Tibetans in China.

"In the past, low-budget films about farming, animal husbandry were mostly translated, now the situation has changed greatly, films themed on medical care, protection of minors, disease prevention, safety and protection, crime prevention were also covered, which makes the translation much harder," said Wu Zhengjun, head of Gansu Province's Ethnic Languages Translation and Production Center.

Chouja Dongrub, a Tibetan young man born after 1985, works as a translation editor and also a dubbing actor. He sometimes dubs for as many as one dozen different characters. He said, "Helping our Tibetan families and friends watch the latest shows and movies in a language they understand, and helping them get the latest information from the outside world is the biggest motivation for my translation and production work.”

Ethnic minority films are very popular in Tibetan-inhabited areas of China. In 2016, Movies translated by Gansu Province's Ethnic Languages Translation and Production Center has shown more than 4,050 screenings, benefitting around 40 thousand Tibetan residents.
