Tibet is the main producing area of highland barley, where barley planting acreage accounted for more than 70% of the total crop sown area. Among the total grain consumption in the region, about 70% is barley. In Tibet, to ensure the supply of barley is the priority among priorities of ensuring food security.

 

"Tibet Highland Barley No. 2000" possesses a lot of advantages, such as high yield, better lodging-resistance and white grain etc. It can yield up to 300 to 400 kg per unit area, which yields another 25 kilograms per acre than the original varieties." Nyima, president of the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Sciences Academy of Tibet Autonomous Region, said that good demonstration and effective promotion of good seeds has accelerated the food production. Tibet's total grain output exceeded 1 million tons in 2015.

 

Nyima said, according to the standard that per capita consumption is 400 kilograms of food per year, the annual output of highland barley in Tibet is more than 1 million tons, which means that Tibet has basically reached the food supply safety line. At present, Tibet has realized self-sufficiency of barley.

 

High-quality seed promotion also improves the farmers' income in Tibet. Deputy director of the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Sciences Academy of Tibet Autonomous Region said, the straws yield of "Tibet Highland Barley No. 2000" can increase by about 11% per mu, plus the barley yield increase, if one household plants 10 acres of land, his income per year can increase over one thousand yuan RMB."
