Tibet to invest $81.42b in transport in 13th Five-Year Plan

Nov. 14, 2016 -- In the period of 12th Five-Year Plan, Lhasa-Nyingchi high grade highway, expressway from Nyingchi to Menling Airport, Kala tunnel and Yajiang bridge have opened to the traffic. A total of 300 km high grade highway was completed. At the moment, Lhasa-Shigatse Railway has been put into operation. The construction of Lhasa-Nyinchi Railway is in full swing. The expansion project of Gonggar Airport, Menling Airport and Pangda Airport makes progress. The number of airlines linking with 40 domestic and overseas cities reached 63. Tibet's three-dimensional transportation system gets great improvement. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, Tibet has set up a comprehensive traffic system.
 
The past five years have seen rapid development of Tibet's transportation industry. Over the past five years, with the largest investment in transportation, Tibet endeavored to overfulfill the task of road construction, achieve breakthroughs in a number of high grade highway and make progress in rural road building. According to the Transport Department of China's Tibet Autonomous Region, Tibet spent RMB 44.7 billion over the past five years on improving its transport infrastructure, a 72.84 percent increase from 11th Five-Year Plan. Roads opening to traffic in Tibet Autonomous Region reached 78,348 km, an increase of 21,325 km compared with the end of 11th Five-Year Plan. 67 key transport projects start construction. 34 transport projects including the road from Dag Chuka to Shigatse have been completed. A history of isolation was end for Metok County with the opening of highway. Five counties such as Bachen and Riwoche have access to asphalt road.
 
In the 13th Five-Year Plan, Tibet plans to pour RMB 543.1 billion (81.42 billion U.S. dollars) into transportation industry, striving to complete the investment of RMB 238.8 billion (35.8 billion U.S. dollars). Tibet plans to set up three-hour comprehensive traffic circle and two-hour economic circle with the center of Lhasa. Roads in Tibet will reach 110,000 km by 2020. Traffic bottlenecks hindering the economic and social development will be phased out.
 
In the 13th Five-Year Plan, Tibet will accelerate the construction of infrastructure network involving road, railway, civil aviation, postal system and other fields and gradually set up a comprehensive traffic transportation system featuring comfortable, safe, intelligent and ecological conditions.
