11 events to be held in 2016 Shoton Festival

Aug. 23, 2016 -- The 2016 Shoton Festival will kick off in Lhasa, capital of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, on Sep. 1. This week-long traditional cultural and religious festival, themed as “beautiful homeland, happy Lhasa”, follows the principles of safety, simplicity, formality and humanism, according to Wu Yasong, deputy mayor of Lhasa. Through various festival events covering culture, sports, tourism and trade, Tibetan traditional culture will be inherited and developed. Besides, it is a rare opportunity to show the economic and social fruits achieved by Lhasa and to expand its influence, which provides good conditions for the rapid and sustainable economic development of Lhasa.
 
2016 China Lhasa Shoton Festival press conference were held in the government of China’s Tibet Autonomous Region on Aug. 19. It is reported from this press conference that during the period of 2016 Lhasa Shoton Festival, there will be 11 activities such as Buddha painting unfolding, Tibetan Opera Performance, the 10th Namtso International Trekking Ceremony and Tibetan Chess Competition.
 
2016 Shoton Festival kicks off in the Basketball Stadium of Lhasa Sports Center on the evening of Sep. 1.
 
The Buddha paintings will be exhibited in Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery on Sep.1.
 
In recent years, Tibetan opera has achieved great improvement in China’s Tibet. From Sep. 1 to Sep. 7, the 4th Tibetan Opera Competition and the 5th Tibetan Opera Performance will be held in NorbuLingka and Dzongyablukhang Park, which shows Tibetan opera’s artistic charm.
 
On Sep. 1, Shoton Festival promotion conference of investment projects and singing ceremony will be held in Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts, Lhasa. This activity means to publicize Lhasa’s distinctive resources, industries and products, and introduce Lhasa Pure Land Health industry and Lhasa’s cultural tourism.
 
The 10th Namtso International Trekking Ceremony opens on Sep. 2. Cultural celebrities from home and abroad, movie stars, trekking lovers and tourism lovers will attend this activity. Hiking along Namtso aims to introduce the beautiful scenery of Namtso and increase the environmental awareness of tourists. Namtso Lake, located in 240km northwest of Lhasa, is considered as one of the three holly lakes in Tibet.
 
The 6th Lhasa Painting and Photography Exhibition will be held in Tibet Yak Museum on Sep.1. The paintings and photos in this exhibition mainly reflect Lhasa’s achievements in economic development, cultural prosperity, national unity and social stability.
 
In addition to the above traditional events, Tibetan Chess Competition, the fashion show of Tibetan clothes and other new interesting activities will be held in 2016 Shoton Festival.
