Over 8800 square meters murals restored in Tibet

Aug.19, 2016 -- Since 2001, Dunhuang Academy China has completed restoration of 8800 square meters mural paintings in the Potala Palace, Sakya Monastery and Norbulingka Palace, as well as the Nagri Guge Ruins and Shalu Monastery.

Mural protection and restoration technology has made progress. Technicians developed a detailed plan in terms of status assessment, comprehensive analysis, and screening of restorative materials and technology, etc.

A number of places in Tibet carried out on-site restoration tests and achieved desired results, which could provide valuable experimental data for the protection and restoration.

In addition, the monitoring probes installed in Guge Ruins could offer a scientific basis for further study on the preservation conditions of murals.

Dunhuang Academy China will continue Tibetan mural protection and restoration work during the 13th Five-Year plan period.
