April 17,2020 -- 10 years after the massive earthquake in 2010, Yushu in northwest China’s Qinghai Province has undergone significant development in economy, infrastructure, industrial upgrading and ecological protection.

On April 14th, Yushu held a mourning ceremony to commemorate the deceased in the earthquake.

Right after the quake happened in 2010, national leaders visited the seriously affected areas to supervise rescue efforts. Two months after the quake, the reconstruction of the city started. 100,000 people from across the nation rushed to the city. During three years’ reconstruction, they have accomplished 1,248 projects with a total investment of 44.754 billion yuan. In one of the world’s highest altitude regions, they have accomplished the most difficult post-disaster reconstruction. The Beijing municipal government, which provides “pairing-up support” to the city, sent a team of 176 people to Yushu and invested 2.66 billion yuan to assist its reconstruction.

The urban area of the new city has increased from 9.7 square kilometers to 14.26 square kilometers. The Gonghe-Yushu freeway has opened and Yushu has built 235 kilometers of urban roads. The city’s grid network has covered 46 towns and 155 villages. The forest coverage rate rose from 3.2% in 2010 to 3.97% in 2019. The poverty rate dropped from 34% in 2015 to 3% in 2017. The per capita income of indigent people increased from 2,970 yuan in 2015 to 5,200 yuan in 2019.

The Yushu people have always been grateful for the whole nation’s help. During the coronavirus outbreak, the farmers and herdsmen in Yushu have made generous donations including Cordyceps sinensis worth 5 million yuan.
