Jan.17,2020 -- The opening ceremony of the 2020 Nepal Year of Tourism was held Wednesday in Lhasa, capital of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
As Nepal shares borders with China to its north, tourism is one of Nepal’s backbone industries with hiking, mountain climbing and gliding well developed.
“Only 1.2 million tourists visited Nepal in 2018. Nepal’s tourism potential is huge. The Nepalese government designated the year 2020 as the Year of Tourism in the hope of attracting up to 2 million international tourists. In 2016, Chinese tourists are permitted to visit Nepal visa-free. In 2018, over 150,000 Chinese tourists visited Nepal and China became Nepal’s second largest source of tourists. Compared with the number of Chinese tourists traveling abroad every year, it’s still a small number,” said Gobinda Bahadur Calgene, Nepalese consul general in Lhasa, at the ceremony.
This year marks the 65 anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic ties between China and Nepal. The two countries have signed a number of memorandums on cooperation in tourism at the 11th session of the China-Nepal Tourist Coordination Committee recently held in Nepal. China-Nepal cooperation in tourism is sure to yield fruitful results, said Duoji Cizhu, vice chairman of Tibet.
