China releases first green development index ranking
update:December 28,2017

Dec. 28, 2018 -- China released Tuesday its annual evaluation for regional performance on ecological development in 2016 for the first time.

The evaluation takes green development index and public satisfaction on ecological environment into account. Results will be a key reference in the promotion of officials, and punishment for any wrongdoing, according to National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)

Beijing, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Chongqing were the top five in the green development index ranking. However, in terms of the public satisfaction on ecological development, Tibet Autonomous Region, Guizhou, Hainan, Fujian and Chongqing ranked the top five.

Ning Jizhe, director of the NBS, said the green development index came from “objective evaluation” of regional ecological development, while the public satisfaction survey reflected the “subjective feeling” of environmental conditions.

The ranking will encourage local officials to push ahead high-quality development.

"More efforts should be made to improve the green development index and promote green development," Ning said.
