Highway mileage in Tibet to break 90,000 km

Oct. 30, 2017 -- China’s central government has been increasing investment in the construction of transportation infrastructure in Tibet in recent years. It is estimated that total highway mileage in Tibet will break 90,000 kilometers by the end of 2017 with 23 billion yuan invested in building roads in rural areas.

In recent years, Tibet has launched a serious of major transportation projects in a bid to build a transportation network. By 2020, Tibet will build an integrated transportation network with Lhasa as the center and linking multiple cities.

 “In 2016, the fixed-asset investment in transportation reached 40.27 billion yuan with a year-on-year growth of 91.05 percent, ranking first among all the provinces in China,” said Yongji, Director-General of the Transportation Department in Tibet Autonomous Region.

Tibet attaches great importance to rural road construction. In 2016, 457 rural road projects have been completed and special aid for transportation has been provided, which is part of Tibet’s poverty alleviation efforts.

 During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, Tibet will issue a serious of policies and make reforms to further speed up the development of transportation and build an integrated transportation system as soon as possible.
