The Tibet autonomous region received more than 40 million tourists from home and abroad in 2019, up 19 percent year-on-year, according to the regional government’s work report published on Tuesday at the ongoing regional people’s congress.
Puruogangri glacier, deep in the Qiangtang grassland in north Tibet’s Nagqu city, is the third largest ice sheet in the world, which was confirmed by a group of 50 scientists from China, America, Russia and Sweden in September 2000.The other two are in the Antarctic and the Arctic.
In 2019, tourism revenue rose to 56 billion yuan (7.9 billion U.S. dollars), Qizhala, chairman of the regional government, said in his government work report delivered on Jan. 7, 2020 at the third session of the 11th People’s Congress of Tibet Autonomous Region.
A total of 490 automatic weather stations have been set up and put into operation in poverty-stricken areas across southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
