Tibetan medicine, which originated and rooted in Xizang Autonomous Region of China, is an important part of the Chinese traditional medicine and excellent traditional culture. It is one of the most complete and influential ethnic medicine in China, and has played a significant role in the health of the people on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. The inheritance, innovation and development of Tibetan medicine are vital to the healthy development of people in Xizang, safeguarding the reunification of the motherland, promoting ethnic unity, and the well-being of the people of all ethnic groups. Since the peaceful liberation of Xizang, the central government and the regional government have attached great importance to the development of Tibetan medicine. In more than 60 years of development, Tibetan medicine has evolved from ancient to modern, from serving the upper class to taking root in the masses, and from a single medical treatment to comprehensive development. Since reform and opening up, the Party Committee and People’s Government of the Autonomous Region have included the development of Tibetan medicine in its development strategy, held several regional congresses on Tibetan medicine, issued a series of guiding opinions and polices on promoting the development of Tibetan medicine. Under the strong leadership of the CPC and the central government, TAR has taken protection, inheritance and development of Tibetan medicine as the foundation, highlighted its distinctive advantages, and vigorously promoted the sustainable development of Tibetan medicine. Tibetan medicine education, medical treatment, scientific research, culture, industry and foreign exchanges and cooperation have developed comprehensively and steadily, creating a better situation in the development of Tibetan medicine. This paper comprehensively discusses the development of Tibetan medicine in recent years, especially after the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). It focuses on six aspects which are inheritance, talent training quality, scientific research ability, social service level and cultural influence, aiming to provide reference for decision-making.
