Painted stone lion unearthed in Lhasa

April 26, 2017 -- Recently, a painted stone lion from the Qing Dynasty was unearthed at the construction site on Dosenge Road, Lhasa, capital city of southwest China’s Tibet.

On-site investigation has confirmed that the stone lion is relatively intact, each part of it is clearly visible, and there is paint and color still on the body. The stone lion is 169cm high with a base width of 104.7cm.

“Dosenge” means “stone lion” in Tibetan. It is reported that Dosenge Road is the location of former office of grand ministers stationed in Tibet by emperor of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The lion unearthed is rightly one of the two stone lions that stood at the entrance of the office after research.

Now, the area is off-limits to visitors for local cultural relics department has enacted protection measures to the stone lion.
