All villages in Tibet Autonomous Region will have access to the Internet in 2020 as planned by the local government. By then, the telephone penetration rate in Tibet is expected to reach the average national level.
Optical cables will reach 95% of the towns in Tibet with 2.868 million telephone household users by the end of the 12th Five-Year Program (2011-2015).
During the next five years, 10 billion yuan will be invested in the construction of communications infrastructure in Tibet.
By the end of 2015, the construction of a first-class main optical cable line extending from Xinjiang to Tibet will be finished. Other first-class cables will also be upgraded, such as the Qinghai-Tibet line, the Sichuan-Tibet line and the Yunnan-Tibet line.
Besides, the direct fiber circuit between China's Tibet and Nepal will be boosted to improve the cross-border telecommunication capacity.
Now Tibet is striving to apply the 2G network to all townships, main roads and tourist sites, and 3G network to all major townships or cities.
